Creston Bee Company is women-owned and founded by a 4th generation San Luis Obispo County local. We are committed to building strong alliances with the community; including landowners, farmers, and consumers. We are happy to get the chance to supply our community with pure, cold-extracted honey and other bee products, as well as pollination services.
Since starting in 2019, Creston Bee Co. has been a family effort and it remains that way. Owner, Riley Chestnut, began managing the hives full time in March 2021 and comes from a background in wildlife biology. Riley graduated from Humboldt State University in 2016 and spent the next 5 years working as a Wildlife Biologist. She still enjoys taking on-call work as a biologist working with island foxes, California red-legged frog, San Joaquin kit fox, and more. As such, Creston Bee Co. is deeply committed to the idea of land ethic.
Although honey bees (Apis sp.) are not native to North America, we believe that they can contribute to a healthy ecosystem if managed properly. Further, honey bees have become integral to human survival, as our food system is heavily reliant on pollinators. We deeply believe that, as humans, we need to revive our connection with the land and our food in order to restore balance to our ecosystems. At Creston Bee Co., we're always striving to improve our relationship with the land.
“All ethics so far evolved rest upon a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts. The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants and animals, or collectively the land.”
- Aldo Leopold, Sand County Almanac
